Doggie Treats

What would you give a dog that can't have high protein food as a snack? Something with an energy boost.

Re: Doggie Treats

Most storebought treats aren't so high in protein, so it should be easy. One of my dogs' favorite lower protein cookies is Buddy Biscuits Veggie Madness. Look in any pet specialty store.

Why does he need low protein? For most conditions, modern research indicates more digestible protein, but not limited protein.

Re: Doggie Treats

Mother Hubbard brand..."Just Veggin'" biscuits. Abd although they aren't high energy...raw carrots, and other vegetables work well enough if your dog likes them. The Cocker LOVES carrots...The Rottie spits them out.

Re: Doggie Treats

You use use raw carrots, cooked or raw broccoli pieces, steamed green beans (do not feed raw), apple slices, plum slices , blueberries...just chop some various things up and keep them in then refrigerator for easy access. Tip ! Make your dog 'work' for treats.....sit, stay, down, etc.

Re: Doggie Treats

You could even chop that stuff up, stick it in plastic baggies and then freeze the stuff, No mess and the dogs will love em. I know mine would anyway, they like ice cubes

Cheerios are good low-cal treats.

Yep! Any dry cereal really. Just be sure to choose something without added sugar.

Re: Doggie Treats

Thanks for the advice. I have to give him low protein stuff because he has pancreatitis. He gets sick with high protein dog food. But Im going to try the dry carrots in frozen form. I hate carrots so he could have mine!

Hopefully that will give him energy. He needs som etype of energy boost.

Re: Doggie Treats

Yep, I was going to suggest carots too; we buy the baby peeled ones in huge bags at Costco for the kids and the dogs. The kids get themin their lunch, the dogs get them as treats/snacks. Ocean used to love them but she went off them when Blaze died (she went off EVERYTHING when he died, no food had any appeal at all) but now is coming around to enjoying life - and food - again. Sky was puzzled by them, but now he gobbles them like crazy.

Also, WalMart's Ole Roy biscuits are very cheap and very low in protein (duh, they are basically crap) if you don't feed too many of them... The cheese flavor ones are preferred in our house. Romaine lettuce ribs are a big hit too...

Re: Doggie Treats

You know what else may be REALLY good! I make the Frozen Paw treats (I think that is what they are called??) I take a bananna and mash it up, add yougart and wheat germ and mix it all together. Put it in an ice tray or small little plastic cups or you can even use a cookie cutter on a cookie sheet and fill them. put them in the freezer for at LEAST 4 hours until frozen. They make a GREAT treat. At my house they are called puppy paws and Harley & Wolf My GSD will not LEAVE Me alone when I have a bananna. They LOVE them and honestly they are treats you can share with them. I really liked the way it tasted. I think you can get the recipie off of the Kong website. I know brooke posted something not too long ago about it. Thats what made me go home and try it.
BANANA RAMA: 1 fresh banana · 2 tbs wheat germ · 1 tbs plain yogurt (can use your pet's favorite flavor as well) · Kong Toy that best fits your pet's chewing temperament In a bowl, mash up banana. Then, add wheat germ and yogurt. Mash all ingredients together and use spoon to add to Kong. Freeze for 4 hours. Makes 1 serving for Medium Kong. Double for every Kong Size that is bigger.

Just so you're not surprised - don't freak out when his bowel movements are a little looser and orange!
