quite vocal

In the last few weeks my girl has gotten VERY vocal. She has lots of barks; a begging bark, a talk back bark, a playful bark and all variations of whine into barks. She barks when she is curious about what we are doing. She lays on the floor and whines and woo woos pitifully if the other dog has something she wants. Her whines get louder and more ridiculous till she is right in his face barking either to play or to give her the toy. The other day she was drinking pool water, I yelled 'Hilda, stop it' and she looked at me and barked back, she is wagging the whole time and it isn't in anyway aggressive, but it's just so sassy, I love it. If I just look at her and saying 'what?' it can get her going. Is this an age thing? Her confidence has really come a very long way, is that part of it? anyway, she is pretty entertaining.

Re: quite vocal

She is picking up on the fact that "You love it" and she is repeating the behavior. Basically you are training her to be vocal. Sounds like you both are having a good time.

Re: quite vocal

well, that makes sense! Because all the head tilts and cute 'talking' does get her a lot of postitive attention from both hubby and me.

Re: quite vocal

My girl Sugar (rainbow bridge) was a talker. I just loved to hear what she had to say. She grumbled when we gave her belly rubs, and was just otherwise vocal with us, she always had a smile on her face. Although, she rarely barked to alert for strange noises, or dogs. I sometimes wish my boy would talk or grumble, he is just learning to bark at strange noises. Maybe someday.

Re: quite vocal

Akasha is very vocal also. I really like it. We have taught her to bark when I ask her certain things like, "Do you love me?" That is always a big hit and my neices and nephew are always asking Akasha if she loves them

I have to be kinda careful with what I teach Akasha tho. She used to bark when I would ask her if she was ready, since that is the word I use that tells her it is time to work I had to get her to stop barking. While in the obedience ring, I don't know if the judge would really appreciate her barking when they ask if we are "ready"

The only time Keil is vocal at all is in the morning when he wakes up or when we first get home and let him out of his crate. He has to tell everyone how happy he is and "woo woos" at everyone.

It sounds like you and Hilda are having fun with her new vocalization

Re: quite vocal

Just a side note:

Not to rain on your parade and if you want to teach your dog to be vocal on command that is great fun but........

Always a but......... A dog that is vocalizing too much as commanding you and you not commanding him/her then it can become a big mistake. When they are being sassy it can be cute just like it is cute when a 1 or 2 yr old says mommy I want a cookie now. But when they are 8 or 9 and they say give me a cookie right now!!!!!!!!! Thats not too cute........

If your gonna allow it and encourage it make sure you know where to draw the line. Sometimes they are not "JUST" talking to you........

And when she barked at you over the pool..............She wasn't just "TALKING" to you. She was saying back off. Actually she was saying something else but we are pg13 here........

Re: quite vocal

I know she is demanding what she wants from the other dog when she whines and then barks at him. the pool makes her excited, and she isn't sure what to do about me being in it. But I'll be watching and not let her talk back to me when I mean what I say.

We always laugh because Link grumbles whenever Jer says, "Link, do you love me?" It's a good trick for company and he will only do it for Jer. Jer will go back and forth and ask who he loves and if he says, "Do you love Mommy?" he will not do it. Glad I'm not sensitive!

Re: quite vocal

Reno was a big grumbler and was pretty vocal. He grumbled when he was content, like when he was getting his belly rubbed or when he was being petted. His eyes would close and he would just grumble away with that silly rottie smile on his face. He had a different grumble for when he was made to do something he didn't want to do, sort of like a sassy teenager back talking. He also had an endearing way of telling us when he wanted something. He'd sit in our line of site and if we didn't notice him, he'd let out a howl like awwwroooorooorooo. We'd go through the list - outside, food, water, bed. When we'd hit the right thing, he'd dance around in circles. He was quite the character. He wasn't allowed to bark at us except during play. That would have been too bossy.

Max isn't a talker, but I think Luna may be one. When she is let out of her crate in the morning, she trots down the hallway whining all the way to the kitchen. It's pretty cute and always gives me a little chuckle.

Re: quite vocal

Ocean is pretty much a silent girl, only growls/barls when she hears something outside, otherwise she is quiet as a clam. Therefore getting used to talkative Mr. Sky has been something else! He talks all the time, lots of woo-wooing and AROOOOs and other silly noises, plus some squeaks that wouldn't do credit to a wimpy mouse, very funny coming out of a 100 lb boy. He is quite a conversationalist, but so far doesn't use his vocal talents to demand anything, he is just talk-y in general. It cracks us up, and actually Ocean is starting to respond with her own AROOs when they are playing. We have nicnamed them The Bear and The Cow because that's what they sound like!

Re: quite vocal

Don't know if this falls in the same category, but my 19 mo old male, Butkus, 'sings' along with 1) certain TV commercials (anything with children singing, or the Beach Boys tunes!!) , 2) certain TV theme songs (especially the theme from "Charmed" and "Law & Order), and along with anyone singing 'happy birthday'. He throws his head back and sings, not quite a howl, not a whine. It's so funny.

Re: quite vocal

Carl is such a talker, our house is very rarely ever quiet! Iria has learned how to happy-grumble from Carl and now my brother's female is learning to do so also, but where she picked it up I don't know - their male is not vocal.
