Cat and Command Troubles!

Ok this is a more then one question........lol!

First off I noticed this morning, no birds when getting coffee!!!....... I always have a flock of them early morning. So I thought well I will let Psyche out for a peepee break. I let her out, head to the kitchen, hear a bark and notice it is a specific alert bark so walk out and low and behold we have a cat cornered........

Ok I know, not funny but I been telling hubby for months, as she goes crazy at the windows for the cats if she ever gets to one she won't know what to do, He says yea right it's history.

Well I was right she just stood there barking at it........lol! It was cornered good too. If she wanted to eat it, it would be gone.

My first question is some extra ideas on making her obey in such a situation. She has not ignored me and disobeyed Come in a long time. Even with birds and rats in her mouth she has come when told.

Second is how can I run these cats off without hurting them. I have told the neighbor they belong to that I'm scared that Psyche will kill them when we first moved in and he had the oh well thats life attitude. Their are three that keep landing my back yard. they are going to start killing my baby birds with spring nest up...... Even Psyche leaves the nest alone.

We thought about wire on top of the fence, but they have gone over our roof too. I don't want to hurt them but its only a matter of time before Psyche does decide to kill one or Hubby decides to if she don't........

I feel backyard is fair game but I'm not to happy she ignored me.......Infact I have a nice little name for her right now but I wll get over it.....

Bootcamp time........

Re: Cat and Command Troubles!

While I can certainly understand how upset you would be if Psyche did something to the cat - and as much as I LOVE cats! - you can't feel that's your responsibility, especially since you already warned the neighbor. As far as getting Psyche to come back if she absolutely won't listen to "Come" - how 'bout "Cookie" - works for mine 100% (although they've never had a cat cornered yet).

Re: Cat and Command Troubles!

We can get live traps from animal control up here. If my neighbor had such a lack of concern for his/her cats, I think I would be forced to trap them and take them to animal control.

If you can get them back in the yard after this, that is. LOL.

I HAD STEAK AND WAS SCREAMING STEAK!!!!!!!!!........LOL! But I'm a firm believer the minute she didn't come when called that it was a failed episode and was not going to get into screaming 20 minutes so marched out in my PJ's bare footed through the grass and grabbed her collar and yanked her butt in mumbling "THAT NAME".........

And no she didn't get that steak........

Re: Cat and Command Troubles!

I like LavenderRott's idea of humanely trapping the cats. Psyche's restraint so far is admirable, but it may not last forever. Better they should be cornered in a trap than a corner by the fence.

Cats are pretty hard to trap...even in one of those humane (Have-A-Heart?) traps. Make sure you use the kind that opens at both ends. Good Luck.

Re: Cat and Command Troubles!

I would be concerned about your dogs well being as well. Even if the cats have been de-clawed, it is usually just the fronts and they can still do damage with the backs.
I have a real beef with people that let any of their pets run wild. They think they are doing them a favour by letting them run "like they would in their natural surroundings" Guess what folks, cats, dogs and other now domestic pets have no "natural" surrounding and need to be shelterd from all the things that can do them harm in their new surroundings. Things like other wild animals (ie rackoons or skunks), cars and trucks, neighbourhood kids etc. can be dangerous to our animals.
Sorry to go on about this, but it really ticks me off ! There are a few people that think a power line right-of-way near our house is good place to take their dogs and let them crap all over the newly paved path. Now when I take our dogs throught there (with bag in hand), we get a lot of dirty looks)

I would have a nice conversation with your neighbour and let him know you are concerned about his animals well being as well as yours. Keep up the training so that if a situation arises, you can get control of it by getting control of your dog.

Yes but my dog is smart and fast and she also is outside very limited and supervised pretty well. Thats probably why this cat is alive. I stopped it before my dog decided barking was not enough.

Done that. His response is thats how all my cats have died. By a dogs mouth. It's called cycle of life...

I got physical control of my dog. That was not the problem. The problem was the verbal control which this is the first time in almost 2 years she did not come when called. I assume her drives were just too way up. But we will be working on this. Would anyone like to donate their cat for proofing........

I'd lend you Sassy, but she is part of Missy's weight control program.

Re: Cat and Command Troubles!

Isn't that what cats are for...proofing ???????? Cats should be kept inside, or in an enclosure or on leash, period

Re: Cat and Command Troubles!

your neighbor shouldn't be allowed to have cats if all of his keep dying by dogs and he doesn't care. But at least Psyche didn't eat the cat

Re: Cat and Command Troubles!

I agree with the cat trap idea. I have cats, love them, they are inside only cats. I don’t like it when I find strange cats in my yard. When I first adopted Zeiss I had to deal with a cat popsicle in the backyard, he kept pulling frozen cat parts out of the backyard. I figure not good for him since he was eating it, and yet I have live versions in the house. I would not feel bad at all about putting a trap down, and getting those cats to a shelter. Of course that neighbor of yours might just keep getting cats you could turn his name in when you take the cats over to the shelter...then again that might start a neighborhood "cat war". Maybe animal control will set traps for you if you call and report loose cats? Then you have less involvement.

Good luck.
