| Dragging his butt Me again :). I have a Vet appointment already but was just looking for some imput. My dog was dragging his bum accross the floor about a month ago so my wife took him to the vet and they said it wasn't worms but his sacks in his butt were swollen (technical term I'm sure). They gave him a medication which he took but it didnt really seem to completely stop it, however it did seem to reduce the dragging. I have another appointment for tuesday but i am just wondering what this could be and what is causing it? Cause the medication last time was 70 bucks so I not only want to stop this for Riggs but for my wallet as well. Tkanks in advance to those who respond:) |

| Re: Dragging his butt To be more specific it is his anal glands that are filling up and they should be drained by your vet. A lot of folks that have dogs with cronic anal gland problems ask the vet to teach them how to express the sacks. It can be a nasty job but it would save you a few bucks. One other thing, is he getting a good amount of exercise. I've seen that to help in other dogs. |

| Re: Dragging his butt Do you mean his anal glands? Some dogs need theirs emptied from time to time, but that's usually less than $10. Were his infected?

| Re: Dragging his butt He gets lots of exercise and the most expensive part was the medicine which was because it was infected. And the vet did "empty" last time which is why i am concerned. What causes this? |

| Re: Dragging his butt Few Rotteilers suffer from this, but it's possible. Scooting is usally clogged anal glands or tapes worms. |

| Re: Dragging his butt Panalog Ointment is usually what is used to treat infected anal glands. It's not very expensive. The usually have it at: http://www.bullwrinkle.com/index.htm....htm~indexmain but they seem to be out of stock right now. |

| Re: Dragging his butt We had a dog that had chronic anal glands for many years, and we just took him to the vet every 4-6 weeks to have them emptied. That way they never got infected. When we switched to better foods, we didn't have to go so much, and eventually were able to cut it out all together. Canned pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie filling) is known to help some cases. Add a dollop to his food once a day. The additional fiber helps "force" the glands to empty when he poops.

| Re: Dragging his butt a change in diet often helps as well - sometimes the stool isn't solid enough to empty the sacs when it "passes by." How old is the dog? |

| Re: Dragging his butt Anal Glands!!! I drain anal glands everyday at work!!!! Not very fun and very smelly!! Actually its real easy to do, but if you dont want to do it yourself, a vet or a groomer can do it for you.
