Two Rotties Hey everyone... I am in the process of getting one rott puppy. I have had a female rott, and had to leave her because of a divorce/moving from Denver to Houston. now I am looking into getting my own and want to get a male and raise it for at least a year or two, and then get a female, but I am not sure if it would be better to get the female FIRST, and then the male. I really enjoyed my female rott, she was such a sweetheart, but she wasn't as big so I dreamed of getting a male for the bigger size, but wasn't sure if having an older female with a younger male is better than having an older male with a younger female... OR DOES IT EVEN MATTER? Suggestions please! thanks.

Given your situation, I think I would get the male first. It is easier to add a bitch to a household. Often times if a bitch is established in the house they are not happy with new additions. I would suggest that you put more like 3 or 4 years between them but you've got plenty of time to work that out.

Thanks. That is what I was thinking. We at the time when I had my female before, were talking about getting another one, and I know Mystic,my female would have not like having another dog there, since she was the Alpha already. Thats another reason why I decided on the male. They seem a lot more tolerant of another dog than my female rott ever was. At least I am hoping.

Try to understand my next question/comments. You say you had to leave your female. Why was it not possible to bring her? Also, who did you leave her with, and lastly are you prepared to keep your next dog no matter what the circumstances? I do agree it can be a bit difficult to add another dog no matter the sex if the female is established in the home. However, I do find females to be alittle more cooperative, males can be a bit stubborn, its a trait of the breed.:D If you really want a dog that is accepting of other dogs do all the socializing you can, puppy classes and dog parks are great places for dogs to learn how to play and except others, just make sure your puppy doesn't have any bad experiences at the park, some people believe its their right to bring their dog to the park regardless of the dog's temperment. Neutering your male around 6 months would also be helpful if your considering adding another dog and especially if you want to socialize him at places like the dog park.

I had to leave Mystic, because I had to leave my marriage. She was my husband's dog, so I had to walk away, even though I loved her as well. She showed me that I wanted to have a dog like her, but I wasn't going to uproot her from her house even though I decided to leave. She was his dog anyway. We mutually agreed about that.

just a quick note on dog parks in Houston: there aren't any (although i'm told they're building one on the far west part of town). Check with your local Petsmart to see if they have a "Yappy Hour" social hour - it's the next best thing to a dog park!

Some of us here are strongly opposed to dog parks. If you do a search here on "dog parks" you will see a lot of reasons why. |

Without a doubt there are certainly alot of pros and cons regarding dog parks. I'm in the Portland, Oregon area and I've found one that is just a wonderful place for dogs to socialize but still every once in awhile some jerk shows up with is dog that has no business at the park. However, I go often enough to know that if you can go early morning, weekdays or later evenings weekdays you will usually have regulars I've even made some friends there and my dog just loves going there. I keep eye on my dog at all times and if I see any play I deem too rough he is called to my side and we either leave the park or walk on the outside. We I first started going I watched from the outside and felt that it was a safe enough place for my dog to socialize. He loves the park so much if I even spell dog park he starts to howl.
