Peeing On Dog Bed

I bought a dog bed that is big enough to fit in her crate (48" x 27") before I got her. I didn't have the dog bed in the crate because I had a divider in it. I had the bed laying on the floor in the living room. Every time she went over by it, she would stand on it and pee all over it. I ended up putting it in a closet and it hasn't been out since. Now that she is almost potty trained, I want to put it in her crate. But, what if she pees on it? Is there any reason why should would just walk over and pee on it?

Is the bed washable? I wouldn't try it unless it is washable and even then I don't know if I would.

I bought Akasha a really nice (expensive) bed for the living room and every single time it is out her and Keil pee on it. I call it their pee pad. I have washed it and washed it and still every time I put it out they pee on it and they are potty trained now. It has been at least a month without any accidents (although I still expect a few). I have put the *pee pad* away and I don't think I will be getting it out again anytime soon;)

First of all, if you can't completely wash the bed to get all the smell of pee out, I would just get rid of it now. Confining her in a create on top of that old pee smell isn't a good idea at all.

My girl had an elbow problem so she has a few beds around the house for her comfort. I have two orthopedic beds that fit in her create. They are that egg shell type foam, know what I mean? We can always wash one while the other is inside the crate. She also has a huge stuffed bed in my office. Often times I'll get in it with her.

The bed is washable, but I just wish I knew why she pees on it. I am going to bring it out today and see what she does.

Normally a dog will not pee where they sleep. Maybe this is some form of marking her territory, I'm not really sure what's going on here???

In all likelyhood she pee'd on it because she had to pee and that is where she was when she had to go. Make sure you wash it a couple of times and get all the smell out. Wait till she gets a little more housebroken and give it to her at bed time. Remember too that she will probably chew it up. They like to do that with their beds.... Thats why Widget has a cheap blanket in her crate, she shreaded the nice bed I bought her.

I read somewhere....(probably here :)) that if the crate is too big for the puppy that they may end up eliminating in a corner. Did you possibly take the divider out and now that Mercedes has more room she feels that she can pee in one spot on the bedding & then curl up in the other corner? Just a thought.....

We have decided that Julius will NOT be getting a dog bed until he gets older & we can trust him with a dog bed in his crate or some sort of pad. Right now he just has old blankets that I could care less whether or not he shreds.....which he does occasionally. You could check the Goodwill stores in your town if you have them & sometimes they have cheap blankets.

:)

With a clicker and "shaping" behavior, you can teach them to not chew their actual bed. I say actual bed cause we keep an old towel in there and let her chew that or her nylabone. Just be consistant and reward for positive behavior, they'll catch on soon enough.

I read this also and that is why we bought several different sized crates for Akasha. Her first crate had nothing to lay on until she got a little bit bigger and had no accidents in the crate (which didn't take very long). Both puppies now have either a fleece blanket or a towel to sleep on in their crates but no more dog beds around the house. I may eventually get them a new dog bed but they will never use the old one again. ;)
