Licking furniture?

Over the past week or so, I've noticed that when Sparkle is cleaning herself, she'll end up licking the furniture or the floor next to her. It's not just incidental, she won't be licking herself at all - just the table leg or the sofa. Is she unaware that she isn't licking herself? Is the sofa mighty tasty? Anyone seen this before?

I see this every day!! Maxy licks EVERYTHING!!! He will stand in front of the wall an lick it. He licks furniture, tile, carpet, etc. He is a licker. Maxy licks so much my pug has picked up the habit and he was never a licker before. My husband says it's because I drilled the NO BITE thing when he was a pup. Licking is his way of touching things with his mouth.:p (He just says it in jest he doesn't really mean that) I figured I was the only Rottie owner who needed a NO LICK command.

yup my dog does it. ..... "hmmm I'm licking my leg, licking my leg, licking my leg, hmmm the furry carpet is a little dirty too, it's right near my leg, I think I'll give it a couple licks and clean it right up!"

she doesn't go over the top-- but she'll definitely give some licks to things near her while she's grooming.....

LOL!:D Yep - Birdie is an obsessive licker, too!
It drives me nuts when she wakes my up in the middle of the night and all I hear is licking! Uh - I feel like screaming, but instead I usually throw a pillow at her!;)

My girl does the same thing. I'll sit down on the couch and my leg will touch the bottom and I wonder why it's all wet ~ Nikki. She licks everything even my feet.:D She's one funny girl.

Julius does too! He was waiting at the screen door for me to put his leash on & let him outside. He decided to pass the time by licking the screen door....:p Yes, I catch him quite a bit licking the coffee table or the bookshelves.

:)

Carl is also a "everything" licker: doors, the carpet, the blankets (freshly washed!!!), pillows, the couch, dishwasher, and us.

Our pugs are lickers. Arms of chairs, floor, each other. Guerin is not much of a licker yet. Except when you put him in a car, the windows are fair game as far as he is concerned!

Jaxom is a licker...floors, walls, furniture, himself, us, whatever. I figured it was one of those unknowable dog behavior

Daphne does the exact same thing...rug, sides of her crate, dog beds, whatever. None of the others do it...I have a friend with three Rotties, and one of hers is so "licky" it actually gets obnoxious at times, so she's had to implement a QUIT command.

oh yeah! anni's always been an inveterate carpet licker, but now she's got a new habit. since the weather's been nice she prefers to lie on the porch and survey her yard. but she comes back in the house maybe once every hour or so, jumps onto the couch and proceeds to lick her butt. what's funny is, i don't notice her going anyplace other than the couch to lick her butt!?

Hello fellow rott people. I adopted my half rott/lab mix as a rescue. He spent the first 11 months of his life locked in a cage until a friend told me about his plight. An elderly woman's grown children bought him for her as a companion after a divorce - bad move! The woman was overwhelmed by him. His name was Rags - I renamed him REXX. I took him home as a companion for my AKC registered yellow lab Cozmo who was 1 year old at the time. They became immediate brothers/fellow clowns/partners-in-crime.

Rexx is a licker like I have never known. He licks furniture, rugs, himself, kids' faces, other dogs, my 3 cats, and just about anything else that gets in his way. This can sometimes be a problem since he weighs 120 pounds and is solid black - very intimidating looking. But he is a big mooshpot.

My lab Cozmo is not impressed by this, however, and is very stingy with his licks.

Rexx sometimes wakes me and my husband up with his very noisy licking while we are trying to sleep - lip/lip/lip... And then there is the problem of the saturated bed linens and pillows.

The older Rexx gets, the more I notice his rott tendencies. He is 5 now. However, he is torn - we have taught him to swim like Cozmo loves to do. Rexx was afraid at first, but after much whinning on the shore line, he took the plunge and has become the better swimmer. He even inherited webbed toes from his lab genes, and this helps.

This is a great forum. I discovered it while attempting to understand Rotty behavior. I often just log on to read some of the comical stuff. Thanks for being there.
