I Am SOOO Mad Right Now!!

Ok, it is raining here today and Mercedes hates rain. I just stood outside with her for 30 minutes in the freezing rain and she wouldnt go. We have a deck on the second story of our house and it is dry under there. I took here under and she still didnt go. So, I bring her in the house, and she starts taking a big s**t everywhere. I am so mad I don't know what to do. I have tried offering treats but she just wont go outside when it is raining. I stopped her from going all the way in the house and my SO has her outside right now. From what I hear she still wont go. What should I do? I can't have her going in the house every time it rains!

I'd say grab an umbrella and but your stubborn boots on! Be more stubborn then her and she will eventually have no choice but to go. It shoudn't take long for her to figure out that her only choice is to go outside, even if it is raining!:)

yup... I don't see any other way around it... don't let her back in the house until she goes......

or.....

Someone also mentioned putting a crate right by the door-- out for 5 min, if she doesn't go. Bring her in, crate for 10 min. Out for another 5..... that might help too..... ????

My Hubie is also a delicate flower when it comes to the rain. I do a combo what Birdie's Mom and cpalenchar suggested. I take him out on lead with an umbrella and wait while occasionally giving him his potty command (we use "hurry up"). If he won't go, he gets crated for about 10-15 minutes and then we go out again on leash. Repeat the process until he successfully goes outside.

Hubie has mostly gotten over this once he realized that he would eventually have to eliminate outside. He usually just makes it down the back stairs to the edge of the garage when it's raining, but that's good enough as long as he goes outside!

Also fill up your pockets with goodies and toys and take her out for a happy play when it’s raining. (Sooner or later she will learn that rain can be fun too.)

Bad little girl

Don't you have an area she can just be put in, like alittle fenced in area, if not, make something temporary for rainy days and tell her to stop being so silly and just let her out their till she goes potty. It's going to become a habit and it's not a very good one . What did you do when she went in the house? So see if you can fence in an area and leave her out till she goes, she won't melt, the little brat, lol:D .

It seems that a lot of the girls are bad about going out in the rain. At least the last two that we have owned are/were. Don't forget Mercedes is still young and is still learning what is expected of her. Do the crate thing and be consistant with her, she'll catch on.

I have a delicate flower too...

I stand right out in the rain with her, but getting her out the door is my problem, once she's out there, she will go.

I refuse to let her rule over this issue. If I have to lift 100 pounds of dog over the patio door threshold, then by god I do it.

Its a last resort though. I am trying to save what's left of my back. :o

This usually only happens during the storm season.

I feel bad, but when she went in the house, I yelled at her very lound and scared her, but she ran straight for the door when I yelled. She knows that it is wrong to go in the house.

I don't like to leave her outside alone because we have weird neigbors and I don't trust them. Also, I always like to keep and eye on her.

It's hard to not feel guilt over yelling at at the dog, especially if the dog gets scared. But she'll learn from this and hopefully she will go out next time when it's raining. Try to be positive, usually once they actually get out in the rain they will go cause they know the next thing is back in the cozy dry house.

It's good that you don't leave her outside alone, especially now when she is sooo young. You're a good mother.

I don't know why you feel bad startling her was probably the only way she was going to stop and if she ran right out then you can be sure she got the message. That's a good thing.

Buffy used to hate the rain too. She is 10 months old now and she is better about going out in the rain. She also understands that "hurry" will get her back in the house fast!

Is this the first time Mercedes was introduced to rain?

This behaviour is normal if it is. When my pup saw her first rain, I went out with her and acted like it was so much fun. She loves the rain and it doesn't phase her. Maybe she's sensing the fact that you don't like the rain and wants to get back in ASAP. She's unsure of the rain.

I think others have offered you great advice!
