is my dog singing?

Ok, this is really weird.

I've got Kiara sleeping inside the laundry now, apart from the awful smell and pool of blood on the floor in the morning, I don't mind the idea. (The blood is due to her being in heat)
What I do, is let her out at about 7am in the morning to do her business and leave her out there for the rest of the day till we get home.

What she does is starts singing about 20 minutes later! She does a combination of whining, growling, howling, a bit of a bark etc... This goes on for about 30 seconds to a minute. It's quite funny, but why on earth would she be doing it?
She's just laying down as she's doing it. I don't know if she's enjoying it or she's upset, mad or whatever..

any help would be great!

I've never had a dog that went into heat, but if I were you I wouldn't leave her outside like that unless you have an absolutely dog-proof 6-foot fence and no other option. She is drawing visitors with powerful instincts. The singing could be some sort of love song from her being in heat, I dunno.

Can you say, "I'm looking for a guy and any guy will do?"

For your sake, I sure hope she doesn't get bred one of these days, soon!

It's ok, I have an 8 foot high fence that is solid, concrete surrounded for no digging out.

So is that why she's singing, cause she's in heat trying to attract another dog?

Maybe she is practicing up to be on pet star? If its due to being in season, you will know when she comes out of heat, if she keeps on singing tape her and send it into the planets funniest animals, worth 100.00 and a t-shirt *L* ;)

Hey there, from South Africa

My 7 month old male puppy does exactly the same. When i get home from work. He is just telling me how much he missed me and that i should hurry cos he wants to play. Basically he does it to demand attention whenever he feels left out. His mother did the same, she used sit and "chat" to my hubby whenever he went to the bathroom.

I think it is their way of communicating how they feel, Rotties are after all very vocal dogs that love intellegent conversation.

OK, here's a funny one! Whenever I "sing" "Me and My Shadow" to Wrecks, he tries to sing along! It's a combination of purrs, growls, and barks! One of these days, I should record him and turn the "song" into a WAV, or other file type for people to listen to on a PC! Actually, I'm surprised that there isn't (at least as far as I know) a web page that has rottie sounds. It would be good for a new owner to hear for instance, the difference between a "purr" and a real growl. Just my 2 cents folks!

This is the "singing dog" thread. Not the "in heat", "diaper", "spay after heat", "walking in neighborhood while in heat" thread.

Major,

Her being in Heat could be her trying to sing, that's all.

Singing Rott

My big guy, Carl, does that all the time! He is a very vocal dog. He's a little different, though, he "grumbles" (a whole variety of sounds) when being petted - not meanly or anything. He and his sister, Iria, also love to howl, especially about 7:30am on Sunday mornings. Either church bells or trains, maybe.

behavior

Rexx is an opera star, well-known in canine circles. He is a 5 year old neutered male, so I don't think it has anything to do with being in heat.

Rexx, only half Rott, is the howlingest dog I have ever heard. There is no specific time or place. What happens is my other 2 dogs (both yellow labs - one a 10 year old retired seeing eye dog) both join in and then they huddle together - like wolves finding each other in some dark, cold forest.

My point is, even my retired seeing eye dog (Eric - also a neutered male) is howling although he was trained to be quiet and did so for the first 9.5 years of his life. Until he came here and met Rexx. However, Eric has EARNED the right to be bad, and I enjoy teaching him bad stuff at all opportunitites. Rexx has been instrumental in the corruption of Eric as well.
