A New thing

Hi,

While on our walks Chance would eat other dogs poop. I have read some reasons like they smell undigested food or something missing in there diet. But NOW she is rolling in it What is she missing now, maybe a couple of brain cells;)

I've heard that it makes them think they smell goooooood. Oh yuck! - I just hate this subject. But I've heard they will roll in anything nasty, dead animals, goose poo, etc...

Right after we got Miss Nikki we were out on a walk and of course I being a new Rottie mommy wasn't watching like I should have been. Over she rolled, right into some else’s mess. I thought I was going to die. Now that meant I had to take her home and clean her before she was allowed in the house. Needless to say - I'm more observant on our walks now and that hasn't happened again. A quick pop of the leash and a leave it has helped.

pbach,

When she rolled in it we were hiking and she was off the leash. I thought she was just playing in the ground cover. The first time I said ok it was an accident, but she did it again the second day. It is really disgusting. I really don't want to leash her when we hike beause she loves it, she is a runner and jumper.

Sometimes she is too far for me to stop her. When I call her to come, she is on the ground already and the damage is done.

They do it most often right after a bath or something that makes them smell "good", but some can't resist the delightful aroma of decayed squirrel or dog poop at any time. It's a natural instinct to mask their smell (makes sense if you're a predator). Better work on getting your "off" or "leave it" command rock-solid. ;)

Laura - You might need to put her back on the leash for some quick training in the Leave-It area.

Nikki is never off leash, but that's cuz we've got a long way to go. Still is tethered to me in the house. One day

I'm no expert in this field as I'm learning more and more stuff everyday.

Good luck with Chance.

Thanks Spidey.

I do have to work on those commands, she had been blowing me off lately, even in OB class. She's been getting a little too full of herself. Time for a attitude adjustment.

Take along dog wipes??? B likes to roll in dead animals (bad but not as bad as your problem). He can find them and roll faster than I can call leave it. He likes to swim and there are creeks, so I send him for a swim and then he rolls in grass after he swims, and mostly the problem is gone by the time it is time to go back inside the house.

Mauka who had beautiful long golden fur loved to roll in deer and fox scat. I decided that I would not have another golden as long as I lived in the country where deer scat shows up right in the backyard.

I also have noticed that they roll more right after baths etc. as if there is a battle back and forth for what type of smell is actually "good". I have found that it helps some not to use any scented products on them that humans like, but that dogs apparently don't. I try for unscented products for them in general, and try to clean up the mess rolled in with baking soda and water, sometimes clean earth or bentonite clay is helpful etc. B also tends to roll after I have put stuff on him to keep ticks off. I guess he is trying to cover up that smell too.

If you solve the problem without keeping leash on all the time, let me know what you discover!

Becky, that angel, she disdained all icky things even mud.

Beckysmom,

Thanks for the clean up tips. Maybe Chance won't have to hear me carry on so much with the clean up. "Ohh, Chance what did you do, this is disgusting" and so on :) :)
