Just remembering....

I wonder if anyone can relate to this. My Chivas would LOVE to go the the petstores with me yet when we went to check out and pay for all her goodies and the cashier would offer her a treat - she would very politely take it and then spit it out. Never failed, she never in all her 11 years would eat a treat from the petstore people, vets, trainers etc. I did NOT train her to refuse food from other people. My husband and I would laugh because she would be so gentle and polite in taking it then spit it out quite unladylike. LOL , we would joke that she didnt want to hurt anyones feelings in refusing it outright.
Anyone relate to this?
Kim

You probably have a dog that has good taste buds. You probably feed quality treats and she knows the diffrence. The treats being handed out in different petshops are probably low cost low quality ones, with no real taste. My Moose is like that... Won't eat those cheap Walmart ones, or Petsmart ones. He likes Innova Health bisquits and Old Mother Hubbard. But his new favorite is Woolfs Liver Biscotti. Fastest I ever saw him take a treat, and came right back for another one.
I think your dog has good manners to take it politely, and the smarts to spit it out.

My Petsmart gives out these disgusting BRIGHT RED treats. I don't know whats in them, but I'm assuming food dye is high on the list. Sparkle won't touch them. Once at the dog park, a girl asked if she could give her on Ol' Roy treat. I didn't want to be rude so I said fine. Sparkle took the treat and spit it right in the girl's face! So much for not being rude...

lol, got one of those too...she does it at Petsmart, and the VET....
although I have to say, those huge marbles they have for treats, have to be very hard to chew especially with her underbite...

the look like donut holes... kibble donut holes...

But yes, she does that and it is so embarassing...

I promise I do feed my dog

But she will swallow pretty much any treat waved under her nose. She is greedy!!!!!! She even drools when she sees me eating. She drools if she thinks I have a treat. No discerning taste buds for my girl.

Julius doesn't spit out the treats that they give at Petco. He hoovers them up. He's not a picky puppy! He gets OMH biscuits at home....but the cheap ones at Petco seem to suit him just fine also.

Akasha and Keil will inhale anything that even closely resembles a treat. They are not the least bit picky

Tink always did the same thing Chivas did, take it politely, spit it out. Idun does the same most of the time, sometimes she will eat it, but she isn't a big eater anyway. Thor was super picky about treats, he liked Iams puppy biscuits (no other variety) and Bonz, or as we called them B-O-N-Z's. He learned to spell that one :D Thor also could separate the parts he liked from the parts he didn't. He once was given hot dog slices with pretzel sticks in them and he actually picked them up and ate the hot dog but spit out the pretzel. He could also shell a peanut, these skills made given him medicine a real trick. Cabo eats absolutely anything that even remotely smells like food. He's gonna be one heck of a tracker.:)

Oh Smidgen was always polite about taking things but the only thing she ever spat out was lettuce :) . She'd take anything that came from my hands but it was very funny...she loathed the nylabone & would take it if I gave it to her but she wouldn't close her jaws around it so it would just drop right out of her mouth. Amber is different. She too will take anything that comes from my hands but if it's something new she'll take it as if I'm trying to give her poison...then come running back for more once she dispatches it .

As with Smidgen, Amber will happily take treats from anyone, no matter how low down on the treat chain said treat may be. But treats from the trainer are her favorite...she's a dog that oh so badly wants to be teacher's pet & I swear that she looks at the trainer & sees her as a giant liver treat :)

Birdie will eat anything, except for asparagus - only thing she has ever spit out and walked away from. But, some treats, she will take, spit out, sniff and then eat very slowly, and others that she really likes she hoovers them down - sometimes I think she doesn't even chew them!

Gretta promptly spits out any vegetable in any form (I envy all those who can give carrots as a treat! ) and she is very cautious with anything new.... spits it out, paws at it, steps on it, gives it a few test nibbles, then eats it :p

At the pet store she will eat the treats, but she has this embarassing habit of spitting out the treats to see if it will be followed up with anything better~ if nothing better materializes then she'll eat it quite happily.

My little piggy! :D I just love her to bits!

My dogs won't spit out ANYTHING unless they REALLY hate it, but they have to CHEW it a bit to make sure it's what they don't like......RADISHES are high on this list........my boyfriend about FLIPPED one time when I gave sophie a radish and she chewed it all over his beige carpet before she decided she didn't like it!!!

:D

Daisy won't eat celery or cucumbers. I have to crush a grape to get her to eat it (she only gets one or two, I know too many is dangerous). She won't chew it herself. I use the dogs as instant sweepers in the kitchen and salad days don't bode well for either of us. I discovered the dislike of cucumbers and celery in the corner of the living room a day later .
