Fence Fighting

I am having terrible problems with my next-door neighbors 2 dogs.
I have 2 wonderful Rotties, a male who is 11 and a little girl who is 2 and 1/2. Both my dogs are well behaved ( my girl recently finished obedence school) and are wonderful with my 2 yr old son.
My neighbor has 2 dogs, both about 4 yrs old. One is a Lab cross, the other is a Terrier cross. These dogs will both BARK anytime my wife son or I am in the backyard. They also will bark constantly if my neighbor on the other side is out. They also bark at my dogs occasionally. I can stop my dogs with a command but have had no luck controling my neighbors dogs. It has now reached the point where the Terrier has broken 3 fence boards and can now enter my yard.
I am afraid that my dogs will kill the terrier if they catch her in my yard. I am also frightened that the terrier will bite my son.

I've tried talking to them, spraying cold water in their faces, pebbles in a soda can, pretty much anything I can think of. My neighbor will not even fix the fence and cares nothing about her dogs.
PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!

Alan

The other dogs need to know your smell and presence. Have your neighbour over with your dogs and get them to socialize.

If your neighbour is a total ??????? about it, call the council and make a complaint.

Well, fixing the fence would be the first thing I would do. If you are not inclined or can afford to put in a good fence, purchase a roll of some weldwire fencing and fence staples and apply it securely to your side of the fence.

BTW, a spray bottle on "stream" with a viniger mixture is a better deterant. Spraying water on a Lab mix is usually considered a reward.

Our neighbor's dog constantly barked, begining at 5:30am. I live on a street where just about every house has 1-2 dogs. One morning around 6:30, a policman knocked on our door. Someone around the block had called the police and told them of the constant barking. He was unsure which house they were referring to, since all the houses have dog. I explained to him that my puppy sleeps at least until 8:00, and than he will only get up if I leave the room. I know he thought I was crazy. The short end of the story, was there has been no barking at 5:30am. Once in awhile I will see this officer driving up and down our street in the morning. So I take it, that one can get ticketed for this behavior. I'm sure if you were to press the issue, just the fact that you have a 2-year-old son, would bring immediate results. I think you have gone out of your way, which most people would not do. Now it is time for your neighbor's to be responsible for their dogs.

Alan, my boyfriend is going through the EXACT same thing. The mutt next door is CONSTANTLY barking and charging the fence. I don't know about where you live, but here..........you can be cited if your dog CHARGES the fence line. It's considered AGGRESSIVE behavior. Check with your local animal control and find out what your options are, what can be done and what can't. I would CEASE spraying ANYTHING in another person's dog's face. Depending on what kind of people you're dealing with, it could get ugly. And by what you stated as far as them not willing to fix the fence that THEIR dog damaged and them not caring about their dogs, I would believe that they probably aren't the NICEST people.

Keep us posted on what you find out.

I can understand your frustration. We have also had barking and fence fighting problems. Luckily....our neighbors moved! If your concerned about safety then you have got to put up a fence. It is not worth your child or your dogs getting hurt. We had a good fence so we landscaped with fast growing plants to try to keep our dogs away from the problem area and avoid confrentation with our neighbors dogs. It must be extremely annoying to have dogs bark at you and your family when your trying to enjoy your yard. We also had this problem. I started giving the dogs next door treats ( with owners permission) I know that is rewarding them for bad behavior but we all made friends and it makes spring, summer and fall more enjoyable. Best of luck to you and your family
Lisa
