Digging Her Bed

My bitch has a strange behavior that none of my males has ever shown. Right before she is ready to go to sleep, whether it is on a hardwood floor, carpet, bed, whatever - she starts digging wildly. She is laying on her side and sort of swimming. Most of the time it is cute, but sometimes it gets really agressive.

Has anyone else seen this behavior in any of your dogs? I'm not concerned, just curious!

Yes. In pregnancy real and false, and also my last dog (also female but spayed) used to do that with blankets rearranging them thisway and that till satisfied.

Cane does that too. It doesn't matter if he is on the carpet or the kitchen floor.

Most of my dogs have been diggers.......male and female, every breed, on carpet, dirt, beds, wherever. I often wonder if the older guys are passing the habit down to the younger generation.

My male mixed beagle has been the worst...he's put holes in the center of most every bed we own.

She doesn't dig anywhere else or any other time of the day. Just when she is ready to go to sleep. Maybe the goof does think she is pregnant. She was spayed at 6 months, but who knows.

Thanks for the feedback! At least she isn't crazy I was starting to think it!

digging a bed

I have a spayed female and she does it a lot. It wrecks the rugs, so I stop her from doing it. But I have heard her doing it in her bed also.

I don't stop her because she seems to be having a great time. We have Pergo hardwood floors and she can't scratch them and when she is in bed, she has her own blanket, so she can go to town on that. As far as the carpet, I guess I better keep an eye on that one, because eventually, she'll probably tear it up.

But again, the odd thing is I think she really likes it. She rubs her head all over the place, digs like a wild woman and then lets out a big rottie snort and we know she is down for the night!

Ah, the joys of owning a rottie:D

Mercedes digs at everything, her food, the carpet, grass, and in her crate.

I don't know about anyone else's dog, but it probably means that my dog is nuts! Seriously, she is a real hoot! Great dog, though! Great breed! Nothing like them.

Shanee My dog. She don't dig before she lays down. But she will walk in circles before she lays down. But she will dig and bury all her treat. Inside or outside. She will go to my couch and bury it under blankets, pillows or just stuff it in the cusion as far as she can. I have doggie treats all over the house. She puts them behind things, under things or in my flower pots. She is funny.

hiding doggie treats

My Rott could never do she catches them in mid air and they gone, but I had a chow who always did that. He hid every single cookie we gave him like it was treasure. We always said he was putting it in the bank. He would put them under the drapes, behind chairs, in the yard he would bury them. One day another dog came to visit and found every single one of them in the house and ate them all. It was so funny.

It's a natural thing to fluff your bed.

If my house didn't have floors, Bea would have frequent flyer miles from her numerous round trips to China and back.

(She's always home by dinner though)

One of mine does this and the other does not. Both are males. The one who does the digging will turn in circles, one way, then the other, then the other way, etc. for quite a while. It must be an instinctive behavior used to make the ground comfortable for sleeping. My rottie that does this will also sometimes whine when he paws at his bed. He's also the one who howls in his sleep. Go figure!
