Sneaking Up On Cat

Has any one elses dog done this? My cat will come up stairs and Mercedes will sit for a minute and watch him, then slowly tip-toe over then pounce on the cat. Why does she do this? Is this the "prey drive"?

I think it's puppy play! She's only 12 weeks, right? Her drives haven't TRULY surfaced yet.

She's bored at the time and looking for a playmate. In my opinion. :)

The definition of prey drive has an awfuly, not so nice ending! So probably interacting in more of a play drive. Wish my boy felt the same way about cats. ;)

Julius won't pounce on our cat Poof! but whenever Julius sees him his nub starts waggin' & he walks over VERY slowly to Poof. Now if Poof runs off Julius will get frustrated & run after him....as far as he can get since we live in baby-gate central. I think it's more of a play thing too.....

:)

Well, I hope she doesn't ever hurt the cat. I have tried to get them used to eachother, but the cat hates the dog, so I'm kind of at a loss.

Well---also Mercedes is only 11 weeks old. When Julius was 11 weeks old Poof HATED him. But now that Julius is 6 months they can tolerate each other. By this I mean that Julius can now get about a foot away from Poof without Poof hissing or trying to scratch Julius. It's a verrrrry sllllloooooow process. Or at least it was for me. Just make sure that you have a safe place for the kitty to go.

:)

We have cats as well. It has taken about six months for our cats to stop running from Buffy (10 month old rottie). As long as the cats were running from her she would chase them. Now that they stay and rub aganist her and roll on the floor in front of her, she is just fine with them. She is getting more and more gentle every day.

I think it is prey drive, Johnny will do this for a game if I move slowly infront of him or if I move with cautious he will do this also, he will also do this if he is playing with other dogs

Everyone in the house hates Xander when he was 11 weeks! The cat, the other dog, the older dogs at my work. Teach her not to be rude to the cat, and let her be a puppy. Now everyone in my house is good friends :p

I think I have the opposite problem!! My cat attacks Jack - just to get him to play, though! The other night he was walking from the living room into the kitchen and she was following him (not to his knowledge) and when he reached the kitchen, she attacked his butt then ran off. And of course, Jack had to chase her and then it was total chaos! But what a riot!

We got really lucky when we introduced Akasha and Smokey our cat because the breeder we got Akasha from had a litter of kittens in the garage near the puppies and Smokey was raised with Brylee our Brussels/Poodle mix. Brylee and Smokey think they are sisters (actually I think Smokey thinks she is a dog) since they both nursed off Brylees mom.

Akasha and Keil absolutely LOVE Smokey. When I take Akasha out to feed with me the last thing we do on our way in is visit Smokey. I tell Akasha "Lets go see kitty" and she goes bonkers and races to the front of the house looking for Smokey. When she finds her she instantly starts to stalk her and then pounces on her and they play together for a little while. Keil doesn't stalk Smokey like Akasha does, he usually just walks up to her lets her rub up against him and roll around in front of him.

The puppies are still learning that not all kitties love them and want to play with them. There was a strange cat in our barn the other day and Akasha was thrilled she thought she had someone new to play with, well the stray cat wasn't as thrilled and let her know in no uncertain terms that she wanted nothing to do with Akasha;)

Both of our puppies stalk each other and the other dogs in our house. They do it when they are playing and trying to get a good game of chase going. Akasha is usually the one to start it. She LOVES to be chased!:D
