Why don't you just tell him he isn't allowed on the couch?

Citronella won't work - get a strip of that nubbly plastic matting used in offices & such, that works. Or anything crinkly with a weird texture - or just lay some books across it. Depends what deters your dog!

Or just train him to stay off it...:D
I shouldn't be a smart-aleck, I have NEVER been able to teach my sillyweiler Daphne to stay off the couch in our absence. She doesn't have access to the whole house when we're not around... :o

If you don't want him there at all, you can train him not to get on it. If you think he's "sneeking" there while you're at work, you can get a plastic carpet runner and lay it upside down on the couch so the spikes face up.

Oops. Sorry Carina. I must still be asleep.

Or use double-sided sticky tape, a scat-mat, or aluminum foil.

I found with my dog, her willingness to get on the couch had a lot to do with her opinion of herself in the pack. When I got her, she was very willing to stay on the floor. After I had her for a month or so (she was an adult rescue), I started giving her privledges... and she started hopping up on furniture more and more. We ran into behavioral problems, and now she's on a fairly strict routine (basically following NILIF-- lots of posts about this on the board). She has not been jumping up on furniture at all recently. :)

Don't know much about you and your dog-- but there may be some underlying pack issues that need to be worked out....
