Chewing On Expensive Chair Legs

We have a very expensive cherrry wood table, and Mercedes is runing the chairs because she chews on the legs. Is there anything aroung the house to put on them to keep her from chewing?

Why is this puppy allowed unsupervised access? Young puppies should be either confined or under your watchful eye at all times. The umbilical cord method, where you tie her leash to your belt loop, is a passive and highly effective way to keep her in your sight and build the bond between you. She won't be able to get in trouble that way. :)

She is not left unattended. She chews on them in the few seconds that I am not directly over her watching her every move. When I am gone, she is in her crate.

Hi,

I just let my Oscar after 2 years on his own in the house with out putting him in the cage, I kept him at night and when I leave all this time in the cage becuase he chewed half of my basement about 1 year ago, from carpet to mouldings and rails, and my sofa.

Now he is 1 weeks on his own and so far it's been good, but I'm still kind of nervous.

Then she is not being supervised as fully as she could be... her EVERY move should be directly watched.... a young pup can do more damage in a nanosecond, to both your belongings and itself by ingesting things you never even knew were there..... ;)

Regards,

Elisabeth

Yup, what poohbearsmom said. I'm not trying to be snippy, honestly. :) But what if it had been a power cord rather than a table leg? Just a little something to think about.

"Preventing a bad habit from forming is much easier than FIXING the problem once it's set."

I found that to be the BEST advice I received here on the board :)

Like the others have said, keep her with you at all times and watch her every move. If you have to turn away even for a minute, put her in her crate. I know that sounds like a lot of work, but heck, puppies mean work

Short term solution suggestion - can the chairs be put "up" on the table (upside down like at school)?

Can you gate the area around the table so she no longer has access?

Just 2 thoughts - I wish you well

Flipping the chairs up would be a good idea, but she can reach them still like that. I can't possibly put her in the crate evry time I have to leave the room (bathroom, laundry etc...) Again I ask, is there anything else to use besides bitter apple? (she likes the taste of it)

Can you cordon off just the area where the nice furniture is? Maybe put it all in one room and close the door. For now until she is older.

What about vinegar water? Just make it part water and part vinegar.

But why just settle for something that is going to taste like crap instead of just taking the time to TRAIN her? That's your responsibility afterall. Besides, pups are going to chew on ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. Do you plan to hose your entire house down with something that tastes nasty just to save yourself the time it would take to just watch her, section off a place in the house, or put her up when you can't be with her?

Sorry, I just don't agree with dowsing down furniture in bad tasting chemicals (which COULD harm your dog) to try and "teach" a dog a lesson. There are plenty of other ways and sure they're inconvenient to you but remember inconvenience is a part of "PUPPYHOOD" and it's your responsibility to deal with it until the dog is old enough to know better.

Remember, puppyhood DOES end eventually ;)
