| Dog and Barking Everyone, Here I am again with what may yet seem like a dumb question but I have had my dog, Harley, for a few days now and havent heard a peep out of him, no noise when pple knock at the door, I cant even entice him to bark with teasing a treat right infront of his nose and pulling it away when he goes for it (while saying bark) However he weezes and snores like a trooper and every once in a while he huffs like he is hacking up a furball (or at least he sounds like the cat kinda) and I was wondering if this may be signs of a damaged voice box, lyrnax from using a choke coller? According to the SPCA where I got him he has his name cause he has a low deep bark (sounding like a running Harley). Should i just be patience again or maybe a vet visit is in order? Any helps or hints or what not will help. Not that I will get rid of him if he cant bark, he is an ideal dog so far. Thanks my first HARLEY J:) |

| Welcome to the joys of Rottie ownership!!! One of the delights of these dogs is that they DON'T bark their silly fool heads off like other breeds. The only things my Calvin would bark at were unidentified moving lights in the dark, and bears. Other times he might make a little harrumph noise; but it had to be something serious to bark. Abby is the equally quiet; she will bark once or twice at strangers (to her) entering the kitchen unannouced (we live in the country and the standard way of announcing yourself -- when expected -- is to go to the back door, knock once and then enter with a cheery hi or yoo-hoo), and she will occasionally give me a short woof if she thinks I've been at my computer too long and it's time for a walk. But she never barks when playing, and when our neighbor's little dogs stand at the fence between our yards and yammer, she just looks at them and walks off...it drives them mad! Life is noisy enough, enjoy the quiet dignity of your Rottie (even when s/he is being a goofball)!

| Remember, you've only had Harley for a few days. He's still in the "settling in" stage. As he gets more comfortable with you and his new surroundings he may become more vocal. When we first got Brodie back in August we didn't hear a thing from him for almost a week. A few whines here and there, but not a single bark. Now though, is a different story. He learned about the doorbell at Halloween with all the trick-or-treaters, so everytime it goes off he runs to the door, gives a few barks, and waits to see who's there(it doesn't even have to be our doorbell, he does it if one goes off on TV too ). He also barks if he hears a noise outside, normally that's only at night though. So, give your boy time. I'm sure that soon you'll be wishing for the days when he didn't bark.LOLJaime

| This "problem" reminds of something that happened about 24 yrs ago with our first son. My wife and I were new parents and our baby hardly ever cried. We were truly worried he was deaf or something. So we'd run to the doctor who finally realized we were worrying our heads off. He assured us most parents were in his office asking how to shut their new baby up. Then along came 3 new dogs. Two have never once barked at the doorbell, knocks or visitors. One Dobe and one Rott. Our oldest Dobie will woof at everything however. The middle dog whose another Rott will only bark at things when he's outside. Meaning deer, birds, squirrels, chipmunks you name it. We mainly ignore his barking because he's yet to bark at anything meaningful. :) Paul R. |

| My previous Rottie only barked 4 times in all the time I owned her, and each of those was just a single, deep "woof." My current Rottweiler, a 3 year rescue who I've had since November, has woofed twice. Both times she was in our fenced backyard pottying at night, and she heard someone talking as they walked by out of her sight. Those were both single woofs, too. Most Rottweilers just don't seem to bark alot, which is one of the many reasons I love this breed.
