Car Separation Anxiety

Hey everyone,

I have a question about something. It's nothing big, just an something I was wondering what do I do to stop it. I take Sam everywhere with me in the car, both for work and leisure.

He's a smart dude and he's figured out what places he can get out and what kind of places he's got to stay in the car. The grocery store, Walmart, Home Depot....places with large parking lots (I'm guessing) and big stores, he knows he's not getting out. So he's perfectly quiet and no incident. I can tell he's been quiet because there's no slime all over the windows, front and back. Now, if we go to some one's (ie: client's) house, smaller places, like Kinkos, the post office, garden centers, or places he can see me in the store....it's a different story. He waits for me to enter the store or the house and then he goes ballistic in the Jeep. :( Barking, jumping the jeep is rocking back and forth...it's quite a spectacle. Thank god my windows are tinted so you can't tell what kind of beast I have back there. I can hear him inside the houses and these places while I'm doing my business. The second I walk out of the house or store, he stops everything. Now, if I leave him out there long enough....he just wears himself out and he stops. But we're talking 20-30 minutes here. Most of the time I'm not in the store/house that long.

So, here's my question...how would I go about correcting that? The second I walk outside of where ever I am....he stops. By the time I reach the Jeep, he's been still for a minute or so. So, I'm not catching him in the act of craziness. It's not hurting anyone...but I'm kind of like , yeah...that's my dog out there....don't mind him. He'll stop eventually.

Thanks in advance...:D

I'm a firm believer if you go anywhere that you are going to be longer then 3 minutes or so without visible site you should just leave the dog at home. Makes it easier on everyone.

It is not "car" seperation anxiety, but spoiled TB temper tamtrums. If possible, park where you can sneak out a side door or back door and creep up behind the car, when he starts to pitch a fit jerk open the door and give him hell. Repeat this over and over in different locations and after about a week or so it should be fixed. Leave his leash and collar on him during these setups so you can really drag his ass out, correct the heck out of him and slam his spoiled butt back in the car.

Also, park where he cannot see where you are going.

I take Max inside..Home Depot, Lowes, Mcclendons, everywhere possible.. now I decided to see what he does when I am away from the truck( he stays up front in the passenger seat).. He barked when I first walked away from the truck...I do not look back but keep walking to the sidewalk... when he is quiet, then I return to the truck and calmly say "yes, good boy" and give a treat..
then I walk away and stand again on the store sidewalks and walk back and forth or stand in the doorway...where I can see him..
I never leave him alone out of sight... too afraid he will get stolen..He would go with anyone... he doesnt bark at any passerbys by the truck..
I have been practicing this park a few spaces in , leave his leash on and walk away... I only return if he is quiet... I don't want to reinforce the bark...
hope this helps..

What is a "TB" temper tantrum? - How would he "know" when to act up and when he "can't" get out of the car or is it coincidental?

Hee Hee!

Well, the only reason I knew that one was cause I believe that is what she used for one of my posts on Dozer's behavior. Might not been the exact words though....;)
