| growling and lunging in crate hi everyone, kai,s decided to trow us a new problem, kai has used a crate to sleep in and go to while unsupervised scince 8 weeks old, hes now 2 years old and has allways lovd and accepted his crate. 3 weks ago as i bent down to say hello to him he growelled at me i told him NO and he trid to lick me trough the bars, the next evening i went to give him a treat for bedtime and he growelled again, i told him NO and to lie flat which he did no problem. well scince then it has esculated to everyone in the family, if you walk past his crate while hes in it he growells, if you bend down to say hi or give a treat he growells but now if you say no he gets worse and lunges at you. he will lie flat immediatly on command but still growells and wont have any eye contact. he is completely opposite when out of his crate, happy and obiedient. if this is territoriel and i remove the crate, will he not then take over the room he sleeps in (this being the kitchen, could be a big problem) any advise greatly apprieciated janette |

| IMHO it is territorial aggression but the bigger problem is he feels perfectly justified in believing it's OK to do! To YOU... Somewhere along the line there is a disconnect in your training and his respect... For a dog that does this, I'd do exactly the same as the dog that growls at you when he's on the bed. Tighten the world as he knows it around his neck till his eyes bug out. Get yourselves back in obedience classes and take away all freedoms... It might not be a bad idea to change crates as well. If you're using a vari kennel.....get yourself a wire crate and vica versa and change locations of that crate.. Doesn't take things long to escalate does it.. :(

| any training?? If I remember right Kai was biting and lunging at people. He had attacked a few times. I think many people here had recommeded for you to take him to a behaviourist and to get him into formal obedience. Did you do this?? Are you keeping him in his crate now so that you and your family and friends feel safer? How much time is he spending in his crate? and how much excercise is he getting. If I recall, you could not walk him because of his lunging at people. Please let us know if you have done anything to get Kai the help that he needed. This is not going to get better:( You must get help for Kai or you have a very, very dangerous dog living with your family. Gina

| hi gina, i have posted an update in general, but to recap, kai was evaluated by a behabiourist who specialises in rotties, she said kai was not an aggressive dog but starting to show signs of domminence, she gave me a list of things to work on which we have done and their are definate signs of immprovement. kai has since been checked by the vet who also agrees he is not aggressive. he is now going on the 19th oct for 2 weeks to be evaluated and then worked with by proffesionakls in the field of aggressive dogs and dogs on the bite register, who hope to find what triggered him off and correct the problem. kai is only crated at night and whilest unsupervised, as ive stated he is no problem to us out of his crate, if this changes he would not be here. he has been neuted as advised on the forum. this is not something im prepared to brush under the carpet but i have to know ive done everything in my power to help him, especially as the experts say he is not aggressive and can be worked with. workingdogs please explain the two words? janette |
