| urinating My mother in law came to stay with us for about a month or so and left her 4 year old female boxer with her husband. Apparently the dog started urinating on the carpet. They all think she does it to show how upset she is, yet I don't believe this is the case. My first thought was that perhaps they didn't take her out and she simply couldn't hold any longer and then realized that peeing on the carpet is just fine, yet they claim that she goes out at least couple of times per day. Then I thought that in my mother's in law absence she is simply trying to establish a new order and is marking her territory. I would really like to know what the experts think of this behaviour. Thanks

| Personally, I'd like to give her the benefit of the doubt and get her to the vet first. If she has a bladder infection, all of the scolding in the world isn't going to change her urinating in the house. When an adult dogs behaviour suddenly changes, I prefer to rule out a physical problem first. If she doesn't have a bladder infection, then is the time to look at what has changed. In addition to her Mommy being away, has her routine changed too? Dogs are creatures of habit. If he's sleeping in longer or letting her out earlier in the evening than she was used to - it may have thrown her off. Try to stay to her regular routine (walks, feedings, etc.) and you may see her behaviour go back to normal. Also, if she's "her Mommy's dog" - her husband may have to step up to the plate and have some play time and snuggling time with her, like your Mother-in-law does with her. Give her some extra trips to the yard in the mean time - to help her get back on track (bring treats to praise her when she goes outside). I'm sure you'll find that once her routine is settled, she'll settle back in too. ;)
