something new

last night my 4 year ols son had problems with shadows in his room so the wife left the hall light on for him.i got up for work this morning and noticed the light was on so i stumbled over to the light switch {1:30am} whle in route i noticed that moto whos now 8.5 months old was on the kitchen laying on the cool tile like he normaly is, so i was about to shut the hall light off when i heard something that sounded like a bear coming out of my sons room {nearly scared the crap out of me} moto appeared 2seconds later inside my sons room looking out at me staring at me with a low growl, i said "easy it's me" he instantly stopped growling and laid back down in my sons room.i then petted him on his head and verbally rewarded him , and drove off to work thinking is this a sign of protection for my family particularly my 4 year old son? i think so, which brought a smile to my face also these last 2.5 months i've been working graveyard shift so i come home early and play with moto and take him out to the dog park so i know our bond is growing quite strong, he follows me all over the house but then again he really follows the entire family around each at different times, just thought i'd share

I've often noticed that when someone is upset or stressed that pets just 'know' and do their best to help! I had had a particularly difficult day, was ill and just wanted to curl up and be left alone. Before I knew it, my cat had jumped up on my lap and curled into a ball - purring as hard as she could.

Next thing I knew, I wasn't upset, I was giggling while playing with Bailey and I was feeling better. :)

She doesn't usually do this, so why did she? I'm convinced that we have a certain body language when we're not feeling well / feeling upset - that tells our pets. Dogs seem to know when we need a good snuggle. ;)

I think your dog knew that your son was nervous and he stayed by his side for that reason. Good Boy!! :D

I definitely agree with TrishB!

All my pets comforted me when I was ill or sad. I had a wonderful red persian named Nikki, who was my best buddy EVER! Sadly, he only lived to be 4. He died in 1991 and I still miss him terribly. He had kidney failure and thanks to th evet who misdiagnosed him!

Anyway, my point about pets is that most are smarter than we give them credit for. Especially Nikki, he knew if I was ill, and he would stay nearby to make sure I was ok, and you could literally see the concern in his eyes for me when I was ill or sad. He also purred loudly to comfort me when I was feeling sad. He was your typical spoiled cat who would sleep in bed like a human under my covers with his head rested on my pillow...or he would just lay across my pillow and hog the whole thing!!! He was a big baby and VERY spoiled. I have a painting of me and this cat in my home. Pets can be so special! :D

I'm sorry mijpa I would not have rewarded for this. Well actually I could not have rewarded for this because the situation would not have ever happened. Do you feel safe with your dog having access to your child? What if your child got up to go to the bathroom and your dog figured he needed to protect you or something in the house. I know it seems he was protecting your son, But from what? You? You may say he didn't know it was you, well ok what if one time he doesn't realize it is your son and takes it further then a growl. Not a chance I would want to take.

I always say, whats done is done! And just make sure I remind myself not to let there be a next time!

Now for kiddo scared of shadows......I got my kid one of those lights that reflect off the ceiling. It's of the solar system. I have it set on a timer so it will go off after a few hours. Sure saves on leaving those lights on all night on the Electricity Bill. And she falls asleep studying the Solar system everynight........:D

Maybe I should get her a new one that list the dog safety and training tips.

Toys R US $9.99 and it is round shaped like a clear Globe with the light in the middle that makes the images reflect off the Ceiling. ..:D
