the Trash-Can.....now?

now all of a sudden my boy has gotten interested in the trash can, of course not when im home but when i leave and comeback it looks as though it has snowed all over. let me clarify my Rottie is the muscle he goes in and actually gets the trash and then my little one a chihuahua is the antagonist he rips and shreds and generally just makes a mess, today is only the second time it was done but I don tlike it

now of course i could move the trash-can or put it somewhere but I dont want to this behavior suddenly started and i want it to stop so what is the best way to not only stop him from getting in mine but in general not go sniffing cans its gross.

the problem is that he is smart and its not possible to catch him in the act, he doesnt go near the can when im home

any ideas?

remove the opportunity. Simple, easy and stress free for all. Where dogs are concerned, getting into trash that has been left accessible is not a moral issue.

I do usually move the trash can where it can't be reached once it gets fuller and my girl starts sniffing it. I don't know what kind of trash can you have but you might try putting the cans with pennies on the top to scare them when it tips over. Hmm never mind strike that. I would be afraid the pennies would escape or be torn out then they would swallow them. Some kind of safe loud object or lid with something on it to hold it down.

I'm not really helping am I. Good luck and for safety sake you might want to move it just in case you just cleaned house and had chemical soiled paper towels or something dangerous.

Good Luck

Judi's right! The best way to stop the behaviour is to remove the temptation. ;)

My dog Bridget is a bread fiend! LOVES bread. She'll steal an entire loaf and eat the entire thing - by herself! I can tell the minute I walk in the door because her poor belly is all bloated.

How did I correct it? We put the bread away. ;)

Your dog may not have done it before, but now he knows it's an option! Trust me, he had a blast doing it when you weren't at home. :p Scavenging is an instinct in our dogs, it's a behaviour that's ingrained into them.

The best way to success is to remove the paths to failure! ;) :D
