| Adding a female Rottweiler to family I have a male Rottweiler. 1 Year and 4 months old. I want to get a companion for him. How will the new member of the family effect the relationship with the other dogs. A 12 year old female poodle and a 5 year old male poodle. Thanks for the help.:) |

| I am going through a similar situation right now. We have 2 male dalmations - 2yrs old, 1 female Rottweiler - 16 mos. and have just rescued a 2 yr old female dalmation. All hell has broken loose. One of the male dalmations had been the alpha and all was cool. Now the female dalmation and Rottweiler are not getting along (to put it mildly) and the boys seem to be confused (they tend to be neurotic anyway) We are having a trainer do in home visits to help us through this time. All I can say is it's a lot of work. But worth it when you love your dogs. |

| May I azsk why you want to get a companion for him? Doesn't he already have 2? I could be wrong but I think he's a little young to lose your attention to a pup. What I mean is that he still needs a lot of attention himself, and most likely training. Doesn't he?

| Why another dog? I was thinking the same thing Leader was;). I have an 18 month old intact male and though I've also thought about a playmate for him I realize that he needs much more training and our undivided attention. This is a critical age when the testosterone is reaching it's peak and they're still at times trying to be alpha. I would strongly reconsider and wait till he's a couple years older. If you have other dogs why do you need yet another playmate? If he's bored, simply find more things to do with him, long walks or jogs, hiking, agility, there's lots of things to keep a young dog busy. So I agree with Leader in everything she says. And as far as a new one affecting the relationship of the others, it all depends on the temperment of the others, there's alot to take into consideration, not just the fact that you want another playmate for him. How much training has your male had so far and is he an intact male?Judy Judy |
