Nico protected me from vampire

This is kind of funny, and weird to me. Nico is a big sloppy goofy rott. She takes after her goofball father. She just loves people, and actually it kind of puts me off sometimes cause I always say she would go up to a serial killer and want to be his friend.

Anyway, the other day we were on our way to PetSmart to buy a toy, and we stopped at a red light. She was seated in the passenger seat next to me, as usual.

Well, I'm daydreaming away, and suddenly I hear this real low evil growl coming from her. I turned my head in surprise, cause I never heard her growl like that. I looked in the direction she was looking at, and there she was, head lowered, growling just like those rotts in the Omen, staring at some teenager standing on the street corner waiting to cross, who was dressed in one of those gothic-vampire-get ups.

Make up, peircings, full black outfit, combat boots, and even some sort of black cape. In broad daylight in the middle of our lil ole suburban town.

Maybe he was on his way to a meeting? lol. I know there's was supposedly some vampire club around here a few years ago, so who knows?

I mean she really H-A-T-E-D this kid, or his look, or something!

I gave her little pats on the back, cause to be honest, this kid kind of scared me too!

But I just thought that was weird. The window was rolled up on her side btw.

I just wondered if it was just his look or something....or can dogs tell if something is not right with a person? Even from a distance?

Can't figure this one out.

I take any 'warnings' that my boy Ben gives me about people seriously. He's a good judge of character, and if he doesn't like a person, then I usually won't either. If he's not comfortable around/near/with a person, he'll walk away - not the norm for him - he's like your Nico - a big goofy lovebug!

Seriously - it could have been the look the kid had, or maybe in her past life she was named 'Buffy'!! ;)

Hey, I'm in Los Angeles.............EVERYBODY looks like that! :D :D Right around dusk, the batcaves open and the night creatures spill out! If they're not back by dawn, the caves seal over and they're stranded on the streets in broad daylight! A common occurrence here in the Land of the Noodlebrains. Can you imagine the market we have for capes and sunglasses?

They sure can! Luna is as people friendly as they get and there's only one person in her 7 years that ever gave her rise for suspicion. It's a man who lives a few houses down who is schizophrenic and heavily medicated. He's a big guy who spends his days walking around the neighborhood, for lack of any other structure in his life. He's lived in this neighborhood his whole life and I always say hi when we pass by. He's harmless to the point of helpless, but boy is he strange! His movement is erratic and his arms twitter. Luna gets her hackles up every time she sees him. I asked the vet about that and he said that people with mental illness are chemically unique and she can smell it. I imagine his odd ways of movement play into it, too. I just tell her it's David, no big deal. Without direction from me, I wonder what she would do. I don't let her get very close to him. ;)

Oh, and hmm, I wonder if I should change my name to moonessdog? :p :D

Planetclair,

I had a similar experience with my girl once, too. Mia is also the ultimate goofball, ready to be friends with any person she meets on the street. One night when I was walking her in our neighborhood, there was this weird looking guy lurking, just loitering near a street sign. I had never seen him before, and something about him just didn't seem right. He was sort of fidgeting and looking around nervously. Well, because I hadn't seen him until it was too late to nonchalantly cross the street, I went to turn on the corner about 6 or 7 feet from him. I had noticed that as we approached Mia had become very alert, and suddenly she started barking and growling at this man. She has never done anything like this towards a person before or since, so I took her warning seriously and got out of there post haste.

I really believe that she sensed something dangerous about this guy. I know that my own 6th sense was kind of going off when I saw him. Prior to this I had doubted that she had much of a protective instinct, but now I think that she has a very fine tuned one.

Moondog! You didn't disappoint me! lol. ;)

First I want to say that I'm coming back to edit this letter just now! I just got done reading the "what is you're gender thread..." and Moondog!! You're a girly girl! I'm so sorry! You have a sense of humor so much like my older brother (minus his biting sarcasm, thank goodness) that...oh hell. I was wondering what you meant by..."Oh, and hmm, I wonder if I should change my name to moonessdog?"" Duh. Sheesh! I feel like a fool. Anyhow...ahem....

You're so funny. My brother used to live in Southern Cal, (he lives in the desert now) and he used to endlessly entertain our family with letters that sounded just like you. Which to our conservative Midwestern ears had us rolling on the floor.

Interesting about you're dog Luna and how she treats the man with the chemical imbalance.

I live on the corner of a busy avenue. During the warmer months here, I occasionally get some "yellers" (people who walk down the street yelling loudly to themselves)t myself, since I am on the corner of a busy avenue. It should be interesting to see how she reacts. From a safe distance that is.

Something tells me that creepy guy was more relieved than you that you decided to take off!! :)

Thanks for you're input!

From my experience I'd say it was the outfit and the way someone move more than a judge of character. I was outside a house working oneday with a reflective shirt on when this Ridgeback x come up to me bareing teeth and trying to give me a bad lovebite. Lucky I had a barrier that I could move between me and the big girl.I love dogs and have a good character just ask me:p It happened again with a GSD different place same shirt. After the owner assured the dog I was there not an alien they were fine.:cool
