| Hi Caroline,
Since becoming a home owner, I have owned large dogs and I also have boys. I enjoy gardening, both flower and veggie.
The key to an attractive yard is to have a place for play; ie grass and places with plants, shrubs, trees etc.
I have a fenced yard and along most of the fence line is where my planting beds are. I keep kids, dogs and big balls from doing too much damage by using that wire scalloped fencing(24" high) that you can pick up at Kmart. Once your plants grow up you don't notice it, especially if you get the green wire.
I have lots of day lillies, native grasses and blooming perennials. I mulch the beds with finely shedded bark mulch.
The key is not to let the dogs(if young and naughty) spend much time alone. Bored dogs like to dig and chew. My kids have a cedar play set with a sand box that our dogs like to dig in.
Have fun!
