I did things the same way....just kept looking at them, and repeating "SPEAK!" until they did. Then gave them a treat. After they really caught on, I didn't need to use treats anymore. Also, they got so good, I could put my finger up to my lips and not say a word, and they knew that was the sign for "speak." Smarty-pants dogs! Only one hitch in the deal.....I never could get any of my male dogs to speak.....all of my girls would, but not the boys. Seems as if they felt it was beneath them to do such a thing!!!!
