Talking holding them down

I was wondering if making your dog lay on its side and holding it gently on the ground for a minute when he misbehaves is really something that works and shows authority or is it just a stupid trick that makes things worse?I tried this earlier today when Honda decided to run at my two year old son and nip at his leg today.after I did it he barked at me (he hasn't barked at anyone yet until today) and growled a little bit, almost like he was sassing me you know what I mean?I told him a firm no and made him go in his kennel for a little while. So is it really wise to do that or should I avoid it?thanks.
