I'm not Skip, but I'll answer this.

YES, I think poorly of any dog I see wearing a spike collar. And I see the collar first, then the dog, as I'm betting most people do.

A dog wearing a spiked collar says "I need protection"....so I ask myself "from what?" Well, the only logical conclusion to draw is protection from an attack, which is what spiked collars were designed for in the first place and very much look the part. Why would a dog in a civilized society need protection from attack on a regular basis if they weren't looking for trouble?

No matter the breed, a spiked collar isn't cute....it very clearly portrays that the dog must have frequent enough life threatening encounters (aka dog fights) that its owner deemed it necessary to keep him from getting his throat ripped out. That's a dog I'd question the basic temperament and obedience level of and yes, it would put me off regardless of breed.
