Probably won't outgrow it all the way. My 10 y/o still does it when he gets really excited. I encourage it though as it is pretty cute to see him hopping around in his cute old dog way with the item in his mouth. He never harms the item just carries it in his mouth and totters around happily. He also loves to do the biting grass thing when he is really really excited.
