Adopting from a shelter is different than buying from a byb. When you do (buy from a byb) you are only supporting them, and putting $$ in their pockets for the next breeding
. When you adopt from a shelter, the "breeders" get no money.
It is kind of the same theory as puppy-mills. If you "boycott" them, they will stop breeding.
