We also rescued Buddy from neglectful and abusive owners (three that I know of) we took him in about a month ago. Although he is getting better, with lots of love from us, he still sometimes squints his eyes and lowers his head thinking he is going to be hit, when we reach to pet him. This is very disheartening to me. It is very sad that such a noble breed has to fear the people they very much love.
I am sure that you, as with us, have a very long road to go down before you, if ever, regain his full trust.
Trust is a very special thing, once lost it may never be fully given again.
