IMO, there's a big difference between teaching a puppy or dog manners and breaking their spirit. My female, in particular, has always had a calculating look on her face when it comes to being told to do something. She has even been known to air sniff to see if I have treats and, if I do, whether they're worthy of her doing what I want.
