What is your rationale for crating one and then the other? Crates are home territory. You may be encouraging antagonism instead of familiarity. A dog will not like nearby encroachment of "his/her space," if you see what I mean.
Our rationale was that we did not want the new puppy to be killed by our female. She was a rescue with some temperament problems...and not great with other dogs.

They each had their own crate.....so when puppy was crated...she could go up to his crate give him a sniff, without us worrying about him getting harmed.
Puppy could also check out older dog, without worrying about being harmed.
It all worked out...because we took things slowly and did not try to throw them together right from the start. Some dog need to be introduced slowly.
Safety was my main concern.
