He sounds as if he's in pain or uncomfortable. Arthritis perhaps? Get him to the vet for a thorough check up. You may find all he needs is some pain management, or thyroid meds, or even eye drops... Find out what may be contributing to this sudden change. Once you know, go from there.
Then, get the poor guy a crate so he can have a place of solitude inside. Let NO ONE disturb him there. You can't be putting an old guy like that out, for goodness sakes.
