When we had a harness I thought the same thing too....he didn't chew the seatbelt attachments, he chewed the harness OFF!
It must have been an anxiety thing because now, I can take him to a flyball tournament where he's in a harness all day with no troubles.
It's still worth a try tho for the safety of the dog.
