Ohio is a long way (in more ways than one) from California, but when i was renting with a rottie, I never had a problem, probably because I went with private owners - doubles, single-family houses, etc.. they'd usually want to meet the dog, and that was fine. there was always an extra deposit, but that's understandable.

i know nothing about the california market, but if you can deal with a landlord one-on-one (not some corporate rental office), offer to introduce your dog and to pay a reasonable pet deposit, you may find success.
