I'm sorry, but you'll have to stop what your doing to care for your dog.
Seems to me someone wasnt' thinking clearly when they said "let's get a dog". They are your responsibility, she/he's not ready for the backyard on his own. I think someone should be with him no matter what anyway.
Take a break and do what's right for your dog - and please don't complain about it. I'll do it gladly until my dieing day I love them that much.
