| Re: I cannot believe this... Another thought- but this all depends on how well trained Turbo is so it may not be feasible. When we first got Amber she was 2 and begged horribly. Part of her training was to have her by my side at a down/stay during meals (I'm not talking excessive amounts of time, maybe 10 minutes max). When she kept the down/stay for the entire amount of time she was rewarded with something yummy (not from the table but from my pocket). If you keep turbo in the down stay next to you and sit far from your Grandfather then he won't be able to slip Turbo any food.
We started doing this with Amber after 6 weeks of basic obedience so if Turbo has had that much training it could work for you. This way the dog isn't removed from it's family, is rewarded for acceptable behaviour & learns that lying quietly during meals is a "good" thing to do. This has worked very well with Amber. It was daunting at first but we handled it the same way you would handle the dog breaking any long/down stay, just gently put her back in position.
