I think both smarter or more competitive. I've always had male dogs, but with this being my first Rottie, a female was picked for me and with a personality to match my lifestyle. One thing I've noticed with my female is that she is competitive when it comes to fun obedience challenges in class. She's all focus and tries her best to win. Sometimes she does and other times, she comes in second in class. Not sure if this is a female thing, but I've noticed if she fails at getting her own way, she tries other methods and eventually gives up when she knows she won't win at getting her own way.
