Old school is called old school for a reason. I believe in corrections, corrections should be fair and humane and logical. Yes, this young boy should be corrected, but hitting is not acceptable, IMHO. This person needs education desperately, and offering advice to strike a young dog is dangerous advice. If hitting a dog is the best advice you can give, Leige, I feel sorry for your dogs.
I just want to say a couple things. First, I agree that more then a verbal command/leash correction should be given. When my children were little, if they did things they were not supposed to, they got a swat on the behind. I treat my dogs the same. I'm not saying to beat the crap out of the pup, but I also don't agree constant treats and redirecting work either.

I took the advice written in these forums when my pup was biting like crazy. You guys suggested constant re-directing, which I tried, over and over and over again. It continued to get worse. I almost gave the pup back. Then I started reading some great training advice, and a "cuff" to the body of a dog mocks the same feeling another dog would give the pup for correction, and you know what?? Within the day, the biting was almost completly gone. It worked when my kids used it as well. The pup no longer chases them and bites them. The pup doesn't whine or cry when we correct him this way. He just stops, looks up, and sits down waiting for us to tell him what we want him to do. He's an angel now. You just cup your hand like you are going to drink out of it, and "cuff" him with it. Not hard, just swift, as soon as he bites.

I wouldn't raise my kids bribing them with ice cream and soda to behave, and I won't with my pup either.
