I don't think it's at all unreasonable to remove the pointers from the house, have the dog evaluated, and, if it appears to be something that might be brought under control with the time commitment involved, to try to fix or significantly reduce the problem.
If the experienced behaviorist thinks the dog cannot be helped, or the OP cannot put the time and effort required into trying, then PTS is a valid option, if the dog cannot have a happy, relatively normal life.
