Yes...you can do it, but it takes time and work on your part.
You will have to put him on a leash and take him to the part of the yard that you want him to pee/poop in...and give him the command to potty. Keep walking him in small circles in the area till he goes. Then praise like crazy and give him a treat. You will have to do it each and every time he needs to go out. After awhile he should start understanding that that is the area you want him to do it in.
If he's been allowed to pee and poop all over the yard for a long time...the change may not happen fast. Much easier starting with a puppy and doing this.
