I have learned with my 8 month old that I have to control him before I even attempt to open the door. Otherwise, once he is too excited you can't even get their attention to calm them down.

I tried having friends knock at the door and then making him sit. The door does not open until he is relaxed and ignoring the door and looking at me. If he tried to get up while I was opening the door, I would shut the door and make him sit again. The door does not open until he is at a sit-wait and the door does not remain open if he does not hold his sit.

It's best to practice this with friends first to get it down pat so that you are not opening your door to unsuspecting people and immediately slamming it in their face. Could loose a lot of friends and family this way!
