I had my male neutered at 6 years of age due to an enlarged prostate. He had no problem afterwards at all. His recovery was quick and mostly pain-free. It hurt my SO more then it did the dog!
I just told Bruce to cross his legs, he wouldn't feel a thing. You are doing the right thing for your dog. All will be fine.
