As far as older dogs getting neutered....most have no problems at all. I know that I took many older foster dogs to be neutered and they were maybe a little quieter for the first couple of days, and had a bit of swelling....but nothing to worry about. Neuters are quick surgeries. Make sure he does not lick at the stitches...get one of the Elizabethan collars to put on him if needed.
Does the vet think there is more going on then the inflammed prostate? I would wait till after the neuter and see how things go...no use wasting money if it's the prostate that is causing all of his problems.
