In Australia we have 'Pet Insurance' it covers you for things that could happen. Its a good investment to make just incase something does happen. You are then covered for a majority of the expenses and its not that costly either for AUD$410.40 per year or $36.20 per month ($100 excess, you pay the excess and they cover the rest). Coverage is as follows:

This covers Vet Fees (illness and injury includ hospitilasation referral and complementary medicines $15,000 each year.

Death from Illness $2000
Death from Injury $2,000
Bording Kennel Fees (If YOU are hospitalised for more than 4 days) $2000 each year
Advertising and Reward $2,000
Loss by theft or straying $2,000
Holiday cancellation cost (if your dog has urgent surgery or goes missing up to 7 dats before or while you are away) $2,000

This is a small price to pay for piece of mind if you dont think you could afford it if something went wrong with your dog.
