If you pay $500. for a BYB puppy and then spend another $500-1000. on medical bills in the first year...there is not much of a bargain there.

Having dogs is expensive. If people don't want to get a well bred puppy from a COE breeder and feel they cannot afford the cost, they can adopt a dog from a rescue that is all vetted (spayed/neutered, vaccinated , wormed and HW tested) for about $350. and you will know the temperament and health of this dog. There is also an adoption from a shelter as an option, usually under $100. for this. No need to ever go to a BYB. Just have to be patient and learn to wait.

I've also never understood the "it's so expensive to get a good dog". If you are so concerned about the initial cost, maybe you shouldn't get a dog in the first place.

The buying of the dog is the cheapest part, even for an expensive dog. Factor in food, training, vet bills, toys, kenneling or housesitting, extra security deposits if renting, increased homeowners insurance in some cases and every year you have spent more than the dog cost initially.

One more reason why if people actually took the time to think about all the costs incurred in owning a pet, more animals would be neutered/spayed and there would be fewer animals in the shelters.
