The thing about a treadmill is that it forces the body to work in a way that isn't really natural - puppies may run arund in the yard but only for short bursts then they get tired and slow down for a break, then they go again for a bit. A treadmill on a constant setting might force a dog to work beyond it's capacity and cause injury. I ahve to say that even for people, I think "real running is better" because you can run according to how your body feels and are less likely to push too hard and injure yourself.

I still don't get it - I don't see how it is safe to leave a dog unattended on a treadmill so you still have to be with your dog while he gets exercised. I managed to exercise my dog with an ACL injury. It wasn't easy but having a dog with leash manners (who didn't pull me over on crutches), a fenced in ball field and a dog that likes tennis balls helped!
A friend of mine used to take a stool when she was pregnant to exercised her dogs in a local park. She was too sore at the end to stand for long but he was a great retriever so she sat down and he retrieved.
If you are really too busy (or too injured to walk from your door to the car) to take your dog out for a limited time (maybe a couple of weeks) I would suggest a dog walker or calling in a favour from a doggy friend. I took a friends dog out with mine once when she was recovering from fairly complicated surgery.
regarding Milan, I have to say that I see a lot of things on TV that I personally would never do - The Swan and Fear Factor come to mind....and really, that's the category of TV I put the dog whisperer into.
