I think Karl and Umbro are in two different categories. Karl was sold young after a couple good placings. Umbro is already at the top. There is a difference between buying a prospect and buying a top dog.
The way I took it was that her husband had died and asked her not to ever sell him. That may be wrong but for some reason I understood it that way. Anyway this man supposedly was willing to offer way more than the dog was worth but she said he would never be for sale and this was before money was even discussed.
As far as Filou goes...Filou has been a popular dog but is more of just a show dog. Same breeder friend had a Filou daughter but her bite went bad at about 1 year. He said she was as sweet as could be but zero drive. I love his head though. I am sure that as many times as he has been bred (and to some nice females) he is bound to throw some good offspring. For me, I want my next pup to have tons of drive and so I think I will stick to a male that has it.
