I think of the dog being allowed on a bed or the furniture as a privilege, not a right...

I've never let my dogs sleep in the bed, but initially it was only because I had cats, they were here first, and I didn't want to disrupt their routine. I have, however, let the dogs get on a couch or chair, but when they started their teenage phase they got a little pushy and mouthy so they're no longer allowed on any furniture. The differences in their behavior and attitude was subtle, but I did see an improvement.

Since I've let them up in the past they still sometimes try to get on the couch or chair, even months later. However, when I see them doing this, I tell them "off."

If, at night, your dog isn't obeying, you might want to try crating him. You might still hear whining for a few nights, but he should eventually get the idea. Alternatively, just keep telling him "off" and redirect him to his new bed on the floor.
